Food for Thought: Overcoming cocoa's bittersweet challenges

In North Luwu District of South Sulawesi Province, Rikolto works with Masagena cocoa farmers' cooperative. One of of our interventions includes training and coaching farmers on sustainable cocoa practices. In 2014, Masagena received a Rainforest Alliance certification, helping their farmer members receive premium and better price for their cocoa beans.

Getting a certification is just one of many steps that cooperative has to take to be an independent and professional business entity. Some challenges emerged during this process. In Food for Thought, Masagena shares how they coped and overcame these challenges.
